HALF DAY SIGHTSEEING TOUR IN THE OLD TOWN OF KLAIPEDA
Duration: 4 hour
„Lithuania‘s window to the world“is a current name of the seaport Klaipėda.
The historic change of the town was really dramatic. Founded in 1252, Klaipėda is attributed to one of the oldest towns in Eastern Prussia. During the wars with Napoleon, years when Berlin belonged to France, Klaipėda became the temporary capital of Prussia: Friedrich Wilhelm III had his residence here in 1807-1808.
During the excursion different parts of the town are shown. The acquaintance with the town begins from the Theatre Square with the sculpture of Ännchen.
The Old Town of Klaipėda is very small – it occupies the territory of 60 hectares. It was formed in the 16th century. The town history is very rich. However, Klaipėda went through many different wars and was completely destroyed. That is why the only monuments of architecture left are from the last century. During excursion the visitors are shown the Old Town. They are able to purchase souvenirs and amber in local souvenir shops.
Afterwards the visitors visit one of the Europe‘s oldest post office situated in the Old Town. Its authentic interior is decorated by the original bronze works of art. From that post office one can send a postcard marked with a special old stamp.
During the excursion we show visitors the most beautiful old streets of Klaipėda.
The visitors also have a chance to take a walk along the seaside.
It‘s easy to fall in love with this town without looking for reason or any rational explanation. There are bigger, more decorative, and older towns beyond comparison, protecting their history as tireless guards, however, it is not only empty half-timbered houses, Klaipėda‘s air with smell of the sea salt but free and proud inhabitants of the town that make it as attractive and important to Lithuania as all Seven Hills of Rome.
By tradition, excursion begins from TARAVA ANIKE square where visitors can greet Anike. After that visitors are given a tour around the old town. In one of the old house yard’s the surprise awaits them. It is an old Folk group “SENOLIAI” (Seniors) that will introduce to old Lithuanian folk dances and songs. Visitors will also be offered to taste Lithuanian curd cheese and herbal alcohol drink “Trejos devynerios” made from 99 herbs.
