Home   SHORE EXCURSIONS  THE CURONIAN SPIT
THE CURONIAN SPIT

Full day trip to Kursiu Nerija (Curonian Spit) is one of the most wonderful trips.

Duration: 7-8 hour

It is simply a magnificent trip. After crossing the Kursiu Lagoon on a ferry boat, visitors will find themselves on the Curonian Spit. It is a narrow sandy strip of land, formed by the wind and sea, and it sretches for about 100 kilometers. On its western coast there is the Baltic Sea and on the East there is the Curonian Lagoon, home of the Klaipėda International Port.

The Curonian Spit is a national landscape preserve. Its unique nature sometimes is called the Lithuanian Sahara. In 2000, the Curonian Spit was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A world-famous traveler Alexander von Humboldt once noted that "The Curonian Spit is so beautiful, that you must visit it by all means in order to obtain the peace of soul".

During this day trip visitors will cross the length of the Curonian Spit and will visit the main settlement of Nida (55 kilometers away from Klaipėda).

The town of Nida is situated among the shifting dunes, a forest and the Lagoon. Nida has always been a favourite resort of German artists and writers. Famous expressionists such as Karl-Schmidt Rottluff, Ernst Ludvig Kirschner, Eric Heckel visited this place. In Nida visitors will have an opportunity to visit a memorial house, in which the German humanist and the Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann lived and wrote some of his books. Upon visiting the Curonian Spit, Thomas Mann wrote: “Every time I come here I feel the power of Nature’s origin, which you can feel in the mountains and desert”.

In addition to visiting the Thomas Mann memorial house, the tourists will be taken to the famous Parnidge dune by bus. An unforgettable panorama opens before their eyes: the town, the Lagoon, a pine forest, the Baltic Sea, shifting dunes and dead dunes (overgrown by grass). Having seen the town from above, the tourists will have to explore the town on foot and in the evening they will return to Klaipeda.

We have a variety of busses. Therefore the order of places to be visited may vary. We are flexible to change it but all buses carry out the same program.

The trip lasts the whole day; therefore we offer lunch in the hotel Auksinės Kopos. On the menu: salad, main dish, dessert, tea or coffee, water, wine or beer. 150 people can be seated and fed in one go. After 30 minute brake another 150 people and so on upon request. For lunch this year we started offering an old East Prussian dish –Kaliningrad kleopse, or “Königsberger Klöpse” in German. We did not expect it to be an attraction of the season, but visitors reallly enjoyed it.

In previous trips to Nida a visit of the Hill of Witches was included. The hill is a sand dune with a numerous wooden sculptures on the top. However feedback from other travel guides suggests that this visit requires a minimum of 1 hour and physical strength therefore it was excluded from the program.

If after visiting the objects additional time remains, visitors are welcomed to walk on the beach.

The length of the trip is flexible; it can be for example from 8.30 to 16.30.
